In this article, we will explore how to experience a lucid dream, even if you are a complete beginner.
It is important to mention that lucid dreaming is a SKILL. Oftentimes, it requires time, a lot of commitment and effort. However, it is possible to happen spontaneously and naturally, too.
Lucky for you, I’ve tried a lot of techniques, and I will share with you what’s the most beginner-friendly & easy way to induce lucid dreaming.
We will go through several essential things you need to know about lucid dreaming.

1. Lucid dreaming: The essentials
The importance of your sleep cycle
This technique is all about the sleep cycle, so it is crucial to know how does it work.
During the night we are going through 4 non-REM (NREM) stages. After that, we enter the REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement).
Even though incomplete dreams, images, or ideas can occur in NREM sleep, the most active dream experiences occur during REM.
REM appears approximately every 90 minutes. In brief, the stages of our sleep look like that:
Stage 1: It lasts 10-20 minutes, right after you fall asleep. Here, the muscle activity is slowing down, and you can wake up easily.
Stage 2: It can last another 20-30 minutes. This stage prepares your body for deep sleep. Here, heart rate and body temperature lower.
Stage 3 & 4: These two are usually grouped because they are periods of slow-wave sleep (SWS).
Here, the deep sleep begins, where you can’t wake up easily. It happens after 35-45 minutes of sleep.
Stage 5: REM sleep first takes place after you’ve been sleeping for about 90 minutes.
REM sleep lasts around 10 minutes, and during this period, our brain activity increases, our pulse rises, and we have vivid dreams.
REM stage typically get longer and longer as the night goes by!
That’s very important to know since the lucid dream technique you will perform is all about the REM stage, in the early morning.
Just before awakening, we can be in REM sleep for 45 minutes to an hour.
As you get closer to the morning, your REM sleep increases, so:
LONGER REM = LONGER DREAMS
Therefore, your chance of experiencing a lucid dream increases in the early morning, when you have your longest REM stages.
So, by interrupting your REM, you are more likely to remember your vivid dream and to induce lucidity.
Note: It is essential to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
2. How to lucid dream TONIGHT: The Early Morning Technique
We dream throughout the whole night, but we often only remember one or two dreams upon waking. Usually, we only remember the last dream (or two) we had just before we woke up.
Since we want to increase the chances of experiencing a lucid dream, we will aim to induce it during a REM stage.
1: Plan Your Dream In Advance
Don’t just blindly expect to have a lucid dream. To increase the change of inducing a lucid dream, determine from before what do you want to dream.
So, during the day (or before you go to bed), imagine what sort of dream you want to have. Set 3-4 clear intentions for your lucid dream. You can even write it down, on a piece of paper. (OR go until the end for a small challenge!)
In this way, you will prepare your mind, and it will be easier to incubate a lucid dream. Focus on what exactly you want to see and do.
Do you want to fly around? Do you want to explore an exotic place? Do you want to try lucid dream food? Do you want to meet your idol?
Whatever it is, make sure to imagine it good.
Note: Remember to put an alarm 1.5 – 2 hours before your standard waking time. But more about that – later!
Just know that is best if you do it a few hours before you go to bed since it is recommendable to avoid any electronics before falling asleep
2: Go to bed and visualize your desired dream
Remember, normal or lucid, dreams operate on expectations.
The best way to build an expectation is through visualization and repetition: imagine the desired dream over and over again until it comes naturally to you.
3: Wake up an hour and a half or two before your usual waking time
So, if you usually wake up at 8, then place an alarm around 6 – 6:30.
When you wake up:
1. Stop the alarm and then keep your body completely still.
Moving around will send signals to your brain, and it may transfer you to the waking world, and you don’t aim that.
2. Keep your eyes closed and recall the dream you were just in.
Try to remember the dream before you woke up. Recreate the scene and everything you remember. OR…
If you cannot recall the dream that good, think of the one you were planning before you went to sleep!
3. Keep re-creating.
Your brain will re-create either the dream you had before waking up or the one you were planning. The key is to send back your awareness to your dream world. Once that happens, you will become lucid!
4. Perform a reality check.
It is very easy to lose awareness, once you enter the dream. That’s why it is CRUCIAL to perform a reality check!
You probably know that already, but in case you don’t:
A reality check is an action that you perform to tests your reality. It can be psychical or mental.
In the real world, everything will be normal, but in the dream world – something odd might happen, which will signalize that YOU are dreaming.
Performing a reality check will help you to stabilize your semi-lucid state and to gain more control! A few reality check ideas include:
- Breathing – Try to hold your nose. Then, try to breath through it. Can you do it? (if yes, or if it feels weird, you are dreaming)
- Bite your tongue and see if it hurts – Bite it and see how you feel. Does it hurt? (If it doesn’t, or it feels odd, you are dreaming)
- Look at your hands – Do you have just 5 fingers? Does your hand look distorted/weird? (if yes, you are most likely dreaming)
- Push one finger through the palm of your other hand – Does it feel weird? Can you push the finger through the palm? (if you can, you are dreaming
5. Stabilize even more the dream.
This is very important, especially for beginners. It’s easy to get distracted or excited and to lose the lucidity or even worse – to wake up.
To avoid that and to make the dream last as long as possible, try some of the following:
- Look closely at the palms of your hands. Observe the details
- Rub your hands together and feel the friction
- Spin around and feel the sensation of movement
- Demand clarity by saying: “Make this dream more vivid!” or directly “Clarity now!”
- Engage your senses. Find a subject, touch it, and focus on the sensation
3. The Early Morning Technique: Fundamental tips for beginners
Tip 1: Stop. Go back.
Don’t just read this guide, forget about half of the things, and move on. If you want this to work – GO BACK, understand and remember the things precisely.
Tip 2: Can’t imagine the dream? Repeat this –
What if you can’t return to your previous dream or you can’t create the new one?
Don’t worry. Try to count backward as you fall asleep: “100. I’m dreaming. 99. I’m dreaming. 98. I’m dreaming.”
Tip 3: For more natural transition in the dream world, imagine this –
Visualize kinesthetic sensations. That can be something like riding a bike or running through a field. As you fall asleep, your body will be relaxing, but your mind will be active and focusing on the idea of moving.
Tip 4: What about the sleeping position?
It is not necessary, but the most common sleeping position is on the back, which also promotes proper breathing. However, you can be laying on your side and still have a successful lucid dream induction.
Tip 5: The importance of the mindset
To create a particular MINDSET for having a lucid dream tonight,
you HAVE TO focus as much as you can on learning more about lucid dreaming.
